Digital Thoracic Drainage System

MedTech /Surgical Recovery /Critical Care

Post-operative thoracic recovery requires precise management of intrapleural pressure and air leaks. Traditional manual drainage systems often lack real-time accuracy, making it difficult for clinical teams to determine the exact timing for catheter removal. The engineering challenge was to develop a digital system that provides high-precision pressure sensing and fail-safe operation within a sterile, high-stakes surgical environment.

We co-developed a digital chest drain system featuring a dry suction regulator and specialized valve technology to ensure consistent drainage. The hardware integrates high-sensitivity sensors for real-time leak detection and pressure monitoring. Our engineering team implemented intuitive digital interfaces and automated alarms to provide clear visual indicators of lung expansion. The entire development process—from firmware to mechanical assembly—was executed under a strict ISO 13485 quality management system to ensure the device is audit-ready for FDA and MDR compliance.

  • Compliance: ISO 13485, FDA/MDR standards.
  • Sensing Technology: High-precision digital pressure sensing and air leak detection.
  • Safety Features: Automatic fail-safes and real-time clinical alarms.
  • Mechanism: Integrated dry suction regulator and one-way valve system.
  • Interface: Intuitive digital display for real-time recovery tracking.

The system optimizes clinical workflows by providing data-driven insights into patient recovery. By allowing for earlier catheter removal and encouraging patient mobility, the device supports a faster transition from post-operative care to home recovery.
